Teaser Tuesday

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

  • Grab your current read
  • Open to a random page
  • Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
  • BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
  • Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!
Last week I posted my teaser a day early and this week I'm almost down to the wire and posting too late. But I still hope you'll enjoy it.

I'm still reading The Junior Officers' Reading Club by Patrick Hennessey. I know that mostly everyone else who posts these is reading a different book every week. I will throw the law school excuse out there one more time. I've made some great progress. And honestly I don't like to be a fast reader - I like enjoying the slow pace and spending time with some characters.

The lines in my teaser this week come right after the author finds out he's going to Iraq for the first time:

"So excited that I didn't get it when I broke the news to Jen and the girls and they didn't share my ecstatic grin. Didn't get it that she'd be upset, that she read the reports in the papers not as grisly invitations to come and prove yourself but as ominous threats from a malign force that wanted to seduce her boyfriend away to his idiot death. Didn't get it that this was news to be broken sensitively and apologetically to those more patient and loving than we deserved."

  1. There are times when I do teasers from the same book several weeks in a row. I don't think there's anything wrong with savoring a book and reading it for awhile :) I've been reading Anna Karenina for two years!

This book sounds really interesting, but also a little sad. Hopefully you're enjoying it!

  2. I haven't ever even had the guts to start Anna Karenina. Go you!

I also LOVE the name of your blog. Thanks for stopping by!

  3. I like this teaser, a dear friend of mine whose husband is doing another tour of Afghanistan told me once that the families and soldiers often saw a posting in a different light. This TT reminded me of that conversation. Thanks for sharing.

  4. That makes total sense. I was in the Army, but I was out before there was a war, and I never went on a deployment, so this book opened my eyes to a lot of things I never experienced. I'll put more in my review of the book which will be posted later today.

I liked your teaser too. I've seen a couple of posts on The Distant Hours on some blogs, and it seems like a very interesting novel. Your teaser moved it a little closer to the top of my list. Thanks!

    Thanks for stopping by!
